Shifting my Focus

Tuesday, October 12, 2010
I know how to write books. I'm good at it. I've practiced and studied the craft for years. And I have a contract to prove it.
The problem is, now I have to do a bunch of things I'm not good at. For instance, creating my own website. You might not think it so hard, but for the technically challenged . . . I couldn't even figure out how to plug in my printer, people!

Ahem, also, marketing. So far, this blog has focused on the writing process--it's been aimed at other writers. Now my focus needs to shift to attracting readers.

How the #%@*! do I do that?

The same way I learned to write. Practice and study.

  1. Aww, I'm not sure what to tell you. I can help you with your site if you need. As far as attracting readers...I hate to tell you that it takes an insane amount of time. It is fun an I love networking. I've made so many great connections and friends because of it, but it's also a lot of work and I get discouraged with it all the time.

  1. Are you using that site place we talked about before?

Good luck! I'm not savvy when it comes to technology, I'm with you sister, a printer?? Don't even think about it... unless there are pictured instructions on a wall big enough to actually VIRTUALLY talking to me! LOL

  1. Michelle: I tried! I really did. But the thing just looked like a blog/journal. I messed with it for 30 minutes and couldn't figure out how to make it look like a website.

Jen: I know, right? I couldn't figure out why my modem wasn't working. So I called my husband. He told me to turn it off and back on. That's the extent of my technical retardation.

  1. Good luck, Amber. I know whatever you choose to do, you'll make it work.

BTW I left an award for you on my blog.

  1. I'm certainly no marketing maven. But you might start looking up blogs that are written by people who share some of your other interests, say those who enjoy living a country life since the county fair is something you enjoy so much.

There are also a lot of book review blogs who might be interested in reviewing your book or in having you as a guest.

  1. JoLynne: Aw, you so sweet.

Mary: I'm loving your book review idea. What better way to make connections with people who love books. Thanks dear!
